What Is Ozempic?

Semaglutide (Ozempic) is a prescription medication used to treat and manage Type 2 Diabetes. The active ingredient is Semaglutide which mimics the action of one of your bodies natural hormones (GLP1).

It is also responsible for making you feel full and as a result, reducing your appetite. GLP1/Semaglutide also delays the emptying of your stomach which again goes toward making you feel fuller for longer.

In clinical studies, Ozempic / Semaglutide has been shown to be effective and acceptable for use by patients with Type 2 Diabetes. The clinical evidence also suggests that Semaglutide may also help obese patients with weight loss, leaving the patient feeling more satisfied after eating.

This suggests that Semaglutide may be a more potent drug and possibly better suited to those with a higher BMI or who may be classed as obese. The license indication is for type 2 diabetes and studies have looked at weight loss as a secondary endpoint. Clinical trials for which have looked at weight loss as a primary endpoint have recently been completed and are with the regulatory authorities pending a license to treat weight loss and obesity. Prescribing Ozempic for weight loss in the US is therefore off-license, although clinically justified.

Semaglutide (Ozempic) And Weight Loss

Ozempic Injection For Weight Loss, Whilst Ozempic has been marketed and licensed for Diabetes, the active ingredient (Semaglutide) has shown to suppress appetite and help the person taking it feel fuller quicker after a meal and for longer. This means that those taking Semaglutide are not just likely to consume less during a meal, feeling fuller for longer would mean being less likely to snack as much between meals. This reduction in appetite may also contribute to patients eating smaller portions than what they’re used to. An overall significantly less calorie deficit would tend to result in patients beginning to lose weight when they start taking Ozempic.

How Effective is Semaglutide (Ozempic) for Weight Loss?

A number of clinical trials have been carried out to show the effectiveness of Semaglutide as a weight loss drug. In one such study, 957 participants had taken part, all with a BMI of 30 or above, over 18 years of age, and non-diabetic. The study found that 957 participants with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or more took part in a clinical trial to test the efficacy of Semaglutide as a weight loss drug. Eligible participants were adults over the age of 18 years, who did not have diabetes. 37-65% of those taking Semaglutide lost an estimated 10% or more body weight across all doses. In comparison, those who took the placebo (non-active medication), the same weight loss was seen in only 10% of those participants.

This study concluded that in combination with dietary and physical activity counseling, semaglutide was well tolerated over 52 weeks and showed clinically relevant weight loss compared with placebo at all doses.

Semaglutide is already available to be prescribed in the US and is licensed to treat type-2 diabetes under the name of Ozempic®. An application has been submitted to the regulatory authorities and in the process of being approved as a weight loss medication in the near future.

Ozempic is approved in the US and there is sufficient clinical evidence in weight loss. It has been generally well-tolerated by people who do not have Type 2 Diabetes with no new safety concerns arising in the recent clinical trials. An independent prescriber is permitted to prescribe it for weight loss as long as they feel it is clinically appropriate and justified.

How Is Ozempic Taken?

Ozempic Injection For Weight Loss, Ozempic is a once weekly pre-filled injectable pen. Attached the single-use needle which comes in the box, dial the dose to the required level and inject into the stomach or thigh. Each pen lasts 4 weeks.

The beginning dose is 0.25 mg once a week for the first 4 weeks. This will give your body a chance to get used to the medicine. At Week 5, you will increase the dose to 0.5 mg once a week, followed by 1.0mg. Once you have reached 1.0mg you remain on that for the duration of your treatment.

Side effects

Like any new medication you take, your body will have to adjust to it and it is likely to cause some side effects. Some of the most common side effects are the following:

•  Feeling sick (nausea)
•  Diarrhoea
•  Constipation
•  Indigestion
•  Inflamed stomach (gastritis)
•  Reflux or heartburn)
•  Stomach pain and bloating of the stomach
•  Burping
•  Gallstones
•  Tiredness
•  Increase of pancreatic enzymes (such as lipase and amylase).

These do tend to go away over time once your body has adjusted to it.

Who Can Use Ozempic?

The weekly weight loss jab is suitable for those with a BMI above 30 (or 27 with a weight-related co-morbidity). After you complete you ronline consultation you will be assessed by the prescriber who will take into account factors such as you BMI, your medical history, current medication etc.

Semaglutide will not be suitable and will not be prescribed if you fall into one of the categories below:

•  Under 18 or above 75 years of age
•  If you are breastfeeding, pregnant or actively trying to get pregnant.
•  Anyone who has had pancreatitis
•  Anyone with or a family history of thyroid tumours or thyroid cancer
•  Type 1 diabetics or patients taking diabetic medication
•  Kidney problems
•  Dehydration

How is Ozempic stored?

Before opening, Ozempic should be stored at a temperature between 2°C – 8°C. Unused pens that are stored in the fridge are safe to use up until their expiry dateDo not freeze it.Once you start using the pen you can either store it in the fridge or keep it outside the fridge for up to 6 weeks. If you decide to keep it outside the fridge, ensure that the temperature does not exceed 30 degrees C.Do not use this product if the expiry date printed on the original packaging has passed.

Which dose of Ozempic should I take?

If you’re taking Semaglutide for the first time, or you’re restarting after a few weeks off, you will start on the 0.25mg dose, and take this for 4 weeks (once injection a week). The 0.25 is also known as your ‘starting dose’.

After your first month on treatment, you will increase your dose to 0.5mg and remain on this for 4 weeks. The 0.5mg is known as the ‘titration dose’.

After this, as long as you do not have severe nausea or other side effects, you will progress to the 1.0mg. This is known as the maintenance dose and will remain on this for the duration of your treatment.

What if I miss a dose?

If you forgot to use your injection on your usual day, you can just inject yourself as soon as you remember, as long as it’s within 5 days from your usual injection day. For example, if you usually inject yourself on Monday, then you can take your missed dose up until Friday.If more than 5 days have passed since you were supposed to use your injection, you should skip the missed dose and continue as normal when your next dose is due. For example, if you usually inject yourself on Monday and have not taken your injection until Friday, then you should take it the following Monday and not on Saturday or Sunday.Do not inject yourself twice to make up for a forgotten dose.
